The prototypes for these models came from a book I have called Before Guilford by Preston Cook which details approximately the last 10 years of The Delaware & Hudson, Boston & Maine, and Maine Central Railroads. The book deals mostly with the motive power of the lines but there are a few other shots of equipment as well including cabooses.

A lot of inspiration for building a caboose with LEGO was taken from Larry Pieniazek’s Caboose Page. There are some obvious similarities between my caboose and Larry’s but there are some differences as well. For example my prototype did not have an extended Cupola. My caboose is also shorter and only uses 1x2x2 Classic windows, I tried using a basic 1x4x3 window as Larry did but I found it too big. I also made it so my doors would open.

Another note, The white windows on the engine cab and the caboose cupola are not prototypical the prototypes have black windows. I unfortunately have no 1x2x3 black train windows or 1x2x2 black classic windows at the moment so I comprimised and used a minor color from the paint scheme (White). If LEGO Direct ever offers these windows in black I will be replacing them but until then I think the white looks OK.
